Marketing 2011: Unveiling the Banner

Big Kick-off to the Marketing Department’s
40th Anniversary Year

The Department of Marketing at University of Strathclyde Business School on Tuesday 25 January 2011 held the first of a series of events planned to mark its 40 years of pioneering leadership in providing marketing education in the UK and internationally.

The event, the unveiling of the 40th Anniversary Banner, was hosted by the current staff and students of the Department and it attracted scores of invited guests from the UK and abroad. Among these are Professor Susan Hart, Dean of the Strathclyde Business School and past Head of the Marketing Department, Emeritus Professor Michael Baker, Founding Head of Department, and Mr Scott Taylor, Chief Executive of the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau. The Chartered Institute of Marketing, which also marks its centenary in 2011, was represented by Mr Douglas Vinton (Chairman, CIM Edinburgh), Mr Jim Driver, and Ms Claire Dunning (CIM National Trustee and former President of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce). There was also representation from the Department’s international peers, notably Professor Bodo Schlegelmilch of the Vienna University of Economics and Business and Professor Brock Smith of the University of Victoria, Canada. Also gracing the occasion were former staff of the Marketing Department (notably Professor Sara Carter, Dr Jim Hamill, Dr John Webb, Keith Crosier, Ken Bernard, and Elaine Collinson) and some alumni (notably Ms Melissa McCrindle and Ms Julie Ramsey).

In his brief welcome remarks, Professor Kevin Ibeh, current Head of the Marketing Department underlined that the Anniversary year aims to celebrate the Department’s contributions and proud heritage; reinvigorate links with alumni, ex-staff and corporate partners in the UK and internationally; and recommit the Department to the challenge of sustaining its position as a top international Marketing Department both in European terms and global terms. The Founding Head of Marketing Department, Professor Michael Baker, also briefly traced the early history of the Department, and expressed his delight that the labours of heroes past had allowed the modest acorn of 1971 to grow into a 40 year old mighty oak. The Dean of Strathclyde Business School, Professor Susan Hart, in her own brief remarks, congratulated the Department on this milestone. She commended the vision of the Department’s founding staff and expressed satisfaction at the Department’s continuing success and ambitions.

The formal Anniversary Banner unveiling ceremony was undertaken by the Dean, Professor Hart, who pulled on the champagne bottle-shaped cord following a lively countdown, joined by an enthusiastic crowd of about 200. A huge cheer greeted the sighting of the banner, and it was all smiles as the customary group photograph was taken to commit the first-ever Banner Unveiling event to the history books.

The event also featured the cutting of a beautifully customized Anniversary cake by a 10-person team reflecting a cross-section of the Marketing Department’s ‘family’. The team led by Professor Baker and Professor Hart included Mr Douglas Vinton (CIM), Mr Keith Crosier (ex-staff), Dr Eleanor Shaw (current staff), Melissa McCrindle (alumna), Mr Mark Silcock (MSc student), Ms Lisa Glen (UG student), Ms Fatema Kawaf (PhD student), and Professor Kevin Ibeh (current HOD).

The last words of the day went to Professor Stan Paliwoda, co-chair of the Marketing 2011 organising committee, who thanked everyone for attending and urged their active participation in future Anniversary events.
